Build the audience your week actually calls for
The 43 pre-built segments answer the questions every dispensary has. Your own segments answer the ones only your store has.
My Segments and Smart Segments
Everything in the segment library ships with the product. These are the ones you make yourself, in Customers > Segments, using New Segment.
You pick the conditions, so the audience can be as specific as the question you are trying to answer. Customers who bought from one shelf, have not been in for a month, and can be reached by text is three conditions and about a minute of work.
Once built, they behave exactly like the pre-built ones. They are the audience for a Campaign Blast, they can sit under “Don’t send to” as an exclusion, and they can trigger a play in Play Designer.
Dynamic or static
The first choice you make, and the one worth getting right.
Dynamic
The segment rebuilds itself. Customers join when they match the conditions and leave when they stop, so the list is right every time you send without you touching it. This is what you want almost always, and it is what every pre-built segment in the library is.
Static
A fixed list, captured once. Useful when you need the same set of people for a sequence of sends, or a record of exactly who received something. The trade-off is that it ages: a static list built in March still contains the customer who stopped shopping in April.
What you can build on
- Purchase behaviour
- How often someone buys, and whether they have bought at all. The foundation of most useful segments, and the one you will reach for first.
- Spend
- What a customer is worth, over a lifetime or per visit. Pair it with recency and you can separate a valuable regular from a valuable customer who has drifted.
- Recency
- When they last came in. Almost every segment worth sending to has a recency condition on it somewhere, because an audience without one mixes your regulars in with people who left last year.
- Products
- What went in the bag, straight from your POS lines. The condition that lets you write a message about a specific shelf rather than about the store.
- Channel consent
- Which channels you are allowed to use for each customer. Worth adding to any segment you plan to send to, so your reach number is the number you can actually reach.
- Loyalty tier
- Where a member sits in your programme. Useful for anything where the message depends on what someone has already earned.
How to build one that gets used
- 1
Start from the question, not the builder
Write down the sentence you are trying to answer first. "Who bought edibles, has not been in for a month and I am allowed to text" is a segment. "Good customers" is not, and it is the one people build by accident.
- 2
Add conditions until the list gets specific
Open Customers > Segments and choose + New Segment. Each condition you add narrows the audience and sharpens the message you can write for it. A smaller list you can write a specific message for beats a large one you cannot.
- 3
Add a channel condition before you send
A segment without one includes customers you have no permission to reach, which makes the reach figure larger than the audience. Plan against the corrected number.
- 4
Check it against a customer you know
Find someone in the list you recognise and confirm they belong there. It takes a minute and it catches the condition that does not mean what you assumed.
- 5
Use it, then keep or discard it
A segment you built for one campaign and will not use again is worth deleting. A list of forty segments nobody can tell apart is how a good account becomes an unusable one.
Questions we get
When should I build my own instead of using a pre-built segment?
When the question is specific to your store. The pre-built segments answer the questions every dispensary has. Build your own when you need a shelf, a window and a channel combined in a way only your week calls for.
Should a segment be dynamic or static?
Dynamic almost always. It rebuilds itself, so the list is correct every time you send. Choose static only when you need the same fixed set of people across several sends, or a record of exactly who was included.
Can I combine my own segment with a pre-built one?
Yes. Both work the same way everywhere else in the app: as the audience for a Campaign Blast, as a "Don’t send to" exclusion, and as a trigger for a play in Play Designer.
How many segments should I have?
Fewer than you will be tempted to build. A segment nobody can describe in a sentence will not get used, and a long list of near-identical ones makes it harder to find the few that earn their keep.
We will build the first few with you
Connect your POS and we will build the segments your store actually needs from your own orders, then walk you through the first campaign on them.
