Cannabis vape buyers: dispensary refill and reorder campaigns

Own every refill after the first sale

The Vapes segment in Sticky Cards includes every dispensary customer who has purchased at least 1 product in the Vapes category.

A category with a decision already made. The money is in every purchase after it.

An illustrative basket, not your store’s data. Almost every line here is a repeat of the last trip, which is what makes it a refill business.

What is the Vapes segment?

Everyone here has bought at least 1 product in your Vapes category, which follows how your products are categorised in your POS. Most have already picked a hardware format, which means the buying decision behind each visit has largely been settled before they walk in.

That makes this a reorder business. You are not persuading someone to choose a category, you are making sure the refill happens with you rather than somewhere on the way home. Availability and timing beat persuasion almost every time.

It also means switching costs are real but not enormous. A customer who finds you out of their format twice will change format or change store, and either way you lose the cycle. Stock reliability is the marketing here as much as anything you send.

The Push row is the one to build on, because refill timing suits a free, repeatable channel. Check the Loyalty row as well: a vape customer without a Sticky Card is a reorder cycle you cannot see, and this is a category where seeing the cycle is most of the advantage.

What should a dispensary send to vape buyers?

The refill reminderPush

The core campaign. Catching the reorder before they are anywhere else is worth more than any offer, and push lets you do it without cost.

The compatibility newsEmail

New cartridges, new formats, what works with what. Practical information that this buyer actually needs, and the kind of message that makes a store the default.

The hardware upgradeEmail

Occasional and worth doing properly. A hardware change resets the reorder cycle in your favour, so it is worth more than the margin on the device suggests.

The out-of-stock apologySMS

When their format comes back after a gap, say so directly. This is the category where a stock gap most reliably costs you a customer, and the message that closes it is worth the credits.

Ideas to try

The refill play

Build it in Play Designer to push when a customer is approaching their usual reorder gap. The whole category runs on this one automation and it costs nothing to send.

The back-in-stock catch

Cross this segment with No purchase in 30+ days and send when their format returns. A vape customer who has gone quiet has usually gone somewhere that had it, so the return of stock is your reason to make contact.

Sample text

The one you use is back in stock. Worth a trip if you are running low. Reply STOP to end.

The upgrade send

Run it as a Campaign Blast once or twice a year to the customers on older hardware. A device change locks in the next year of refills, which is the real return on it.

Worth an upgrade if yours is getting on

What to measure

Measure the gap between purchases and whether your reminders are holding it steady. A widening gap in this category is the earliest warning you get that a customer is buying somewhere else, and it shows up long before they appear on an absent list. Track out-of-stock days on the top formats alongside it, because that number explains most of what the gap does.

Questions we get

How do I know when someone is due a refill?

Watch the pattern rather than guessing a number. Crossing this segment with the recency and absent lists will surface anyone who has drifted past their usual gap without you having to set a figure.

Is a hardware sale worth pushing?

More than the margin on it suggests. A customer on current hardware reorders from you for as long as it lasts, so the device is really a claim on the next year of refills.

What costs me customers here?

Being out of their format. It is the one category where a stock gap reliably sends someone elsewhere and they often do not come back, so treat availability as part of the marketing.
