How to measure the revenue your texts bring in

Measure revenue from texts by tying each tap on a link to the order that follows. Send every link to your own age-gated page on a branded domain, match the customer who tapped to their next purchase at your POS, and report revenue per campaign. Delivery and taps show a text arrived; revenue after the tap shows whether it worked.

A shopper checks her phone at a dispensary counter while the budtender rings up the order.

What should you measure for each text?

  1. Delivered

How many texts reached a phone.

  2. Tapped

How many people tapped the link.

  3. Visited

How many reached your age-gated page.

  4. Bought

How many of those placed an order at your POS, and what they spent.

Why measure after the tap?

Because a tap is a person choosing to act on the text. Revenue from people who tapped through is a conservative number you can compare campaign to campaign. A report that credits every purchase by anyone who received a text counts regulars who would have come in anyway.

What do you need in place?

  • Links on your own branded short domain, so each tap is recorded.
  • An age-gated page for the offer or menu.
  • A POS integration that matches the order to the customer who tapped.
  • A fixed window, such as seven days, so campaigns are compared on the same terms.

How do you know a text caused the visit?

Attribution shows association, not proof. For a stronger answer, hold back a small random group from a campaign and compare their spend with those who got the text.

See how it works in Sticky SMS in the attribution walkthrough.

Frequently asked questions

Can I track opens on a text?

Text messages do not report opens the way email does. Track taps on a branded link, then the orders that follow.

What attribution window should I use?

A fixed window, such as seven days after the tap, applied the same way to every campaign.

Do I need a POS integration?

Yes, to match an order to the customer who tapped.

How does Sticky SMS measure revenue?

Through your POS integration: it shows which customers received a text, tapped through and then bought, measured after the tap, with an attribution window you set. Sticky SMS also reports delivery rates, so you can see that texts arrive.
