First-time dispensary customers: turn a first visit into a second

Turn a first visit into a second one

The New customer (1st purchase) segment in Sticky Cards includes every dispensary customer with exactly 1 completed order.

You paid to get these customers through the door once. This list is where you find out whether that money bought anything.

One visit, then nothing. The empty stretch is the whole opportunity.

What is the New customer (1st purchase) segment?

Everyone here has exactly 1 completed order. They found you, they tried you, and the story stops there.

This is usually the largest segment in a dispensary and the one most stores do the least with. It is also where the economics are clearest: you have already paid the cost of acquiring every person on this list, so anything that moves even a small share of them to a second visit is close to pure return.

The second visit is the one that matters. A customer who comes back once is far more likely to come back again, which makes this the point where a customer either becomes part of your business or stays a receipt. Everything on this page is aimed at that one step.

The Loyalty row is the one to watch, and it is usually the weakest on this segment. A first-time customer who left without a Sticky Card is someone you can only reach if they handed over an email or a number, and often they did neither. That gap is a counter problem rather than a marketing one, and closing it is worth more than any campaign on this page.

What should a dispensary send to first-time customers?

The welcome, sent properlyEmail

Not a receipt. What you are about, what is worth trying next, how the card works. It is the only message they will read with fresh curiosity, so it should not be the thinnest one you send.

The second-visit offerSMS

The clearest use of a discount anywhere in your account. You are buying a second visit, which is the step with the highest long-term value and the lowest natural conversion.

The enrolment nudgeSMS or Email

Cross with Has No Loyalty. Getting a card onto their phone before they forget you is worth more than any single offer, because it turns every later message into a free one.

The "what did you think" noteEmail

Ask, and say what you will do with the answer. It is the least commercial message on this list and it makes the next one land better.

Ideas to try

The second-visit play

Build it in Play Designer to fire a few days after the first purchase. Email first with the welcome, then a text with a real offer about a week later if nothing has happened. Anyone who buys again exits, and the play has done its job.

Worth knowing before you come back

The card-on-the-phone push

Cross this segment with Has No Loyalty and run one Campaign Blast about signing up. Everything you do later is cheaper once the card is on their phone, so this is the campaign to run before any of the others.

Sample text

Thanks for stopping in. Add your card and your points from that visit are waiting on it. Ask at the counter. Reply STOP to end.

The fresh-window blast

Cross with Last purchase 0-7 days to reach people still inside their first week. Same segment, much better timing, and a far smaller audience to spend an offer on.

Still plenty you have not seen

The honest cut-off

A customer who bought once a year ago and never returned is not really a first-time customer any more. Cross this segment with No purchase in 60+ days and treat that group as a win-back, with a win-back message.

A lot has changed since you were in

What to measure

One number matters here: what share of this list makes a second purchase within 30 days. Track it monthly. It is the single best indicator of whether your store keeps the customers it pays to acquire, and it moves slowly enough that a real improvement is obvious. Alongside it, watch how many first-time customers leave with a Sticky Card, because that ceiling caps everything else.

Questions we get

Why is the second visit such a big deal?

Because it is where a customer stops being a one-off. Getting someone back a second time is harder than getting them back a third or fourth, so it is the step worth spending on.

Should I discount to get a second visit?

This is the best place in your account to do it. You have already paid to acquire them, so a margin give-up that turns a one-visit customer into a regular usually pays for itself several times over.

What if I have no way to contact them?

Then the campaign cannot run, and the fix is at the counter rather than in the app. Check the Loyalty and Email rows on this segment: if they are small next to the total, sign-up at the till is the thing to work on first.

How long does someone stay in this segment?

Until their second completed order, which moves them straight into Repeat customer. If that never happens they stay here and eventually appear on the no-purchase lists too, which is when the message changes from welcome to win-back.
