Bring lapsed regulars back with a win-back text

A win-back automation texts customers who used to visit and have stopped. It starts once a customer passes a window you set since their last purchase, sends one or two short store updates with a link to what is new, and stops when they buy again. Measure the share who return within 30 days, not opens.

Win-back texts are for regulars who have stopped coming in

Think of the regular who came in most Fridays, knew the budtenders by name, and has not been back since spring. A win-back text reaches them while your store name still means something to them.

You need POS data, so the automation knows when each customer last visited.

Send two store updates a week apart, and stop when they come back

  1. Set the trigger

Pick how many days since a customer’s last purchase starts the sequence. The industry standard windows of 30, 60 and 90 days are built in, or you can set your own, depending on how aggressive you want to be, your state and your local competition. Your POS history shows the gap your own regulars keep.

  2. Send a store update

One short text with a link to what is new. Any offer lives on your age-gated page, not in the text.

  3. Wait a week

If they have not visited, send one more with a different reason to come in.

  4. Stop on a purchase

The sequence ends when they buy again, so nobody who came back gets a text asking where they went. In Sticky SMS, win-back sequences exit on a purchase.

Count return visits and revenue from people who tapped

  • Share of the segment who visit within 30 days.
  • Revenue from people who tapped through. The SMS attribution guide shows how to tie a tap to the order that follows.
  • Opt-outs per send. A rise means the texts are too frequent or too pushy.

Frequently asked questions

When should a win-back text go out?

After a window since the customer’s last purchase. The industry standard windows of 30, 60 and 90 days are built in, and you can set your own instead, depending on how aggressive you want to be, your state and your local competition. Check your POS history for the gap your regulars keep.

How many win-back texts should I send?

One or two. More than that turns a reminder into noise and raises opt-outs.

Should a win-back text include a discount?

No, not in the text. Link to your age-gated page, where any offer can live. In Canada, send a store update with no purchase-linked reward at all.

How do I know it worked?

Count the share of the segment who come back within 30 days, and the revenue from those who tapped through.

What does a win-back text cost to send?

You pay only for the texts you send, in credits. There is no charge for the number or the 10DLC registration, and credit pricing is quoted on the demo call for your store count and volume.

Which POS systems can the win-back trigger read?

Texting is live with Dutchie, Flowhub, Cova, Greenline, POSaBIT, Blaze, Treez, TechPOS, GrowFlow, MJ Freeway, PROTEUS420, Givex, Breadstack and Shopify. Sticky SMS by Sticky Cards, the loyalty and marketing platform for cannabis dispensaries, refreshes time-based segments such as days since last purchase once a day, and the sequence exits on a purchase.
