Birthday and loyalty milestone texts that feel personal

Birthday and milestone texts mark something about the customer rather than the store: their birthday, their tenth visit or a loyalty tier. They run on their own from your customer data, say who is texting, and link to your age-gated page for any offer. In Canada, keep them as greetings with no purchase-linked reward.

These texts are about the customer, not the store

Most store texts are about the store. A birthday note or a tenth-visit thank-you is about the customer, and it tells a regular the team noticed.

Birthday texts need a birthday on file, so ask for it at sign-up. Milestone texts need data on whatever the milestone is based on, such as visits from your POS.

Collect the date at sign-up, then let the automation send

  1. Collect the date

Ask for a birthday at sign-up, with the reason: so the store can send a note.

  2. Set the trigger

Send on the morning of the birthday, or the week before if you want them to plan a visit.

  3. Add milestones

A tenth visit or a new loyalty tier is a good moment for a short thank-you.

  4. Keep the offer on the page

Link to the age-gated page for any birthday offer.

Compare the birthday week with an ordinary week

  • Visits in the birthday week compared with an ordinary week.
  • Revenue from people who tapped through. The SMS attribution guide shows how to tie a tap to the order that follows.
  • Share of customers with a birthday on file. Low numbers mean the sign-up form needs work.

For how these texts stay inside carrier rules, see the Sticky SMS guides for dispensaries.

Frequently asked questions

When should a birthday text go out?

On the morning of the birthday, or the week before if the offer runs all month.

Can a birthday text include a gift?

In the US, keep the gift on your age-gated page rather than in the text. In Canada, a birthday text stays a greeting with no purchase-linked reward.

What milestones are worth a text?

A tenth visit, a new loyalty tier, or a year since joining.

Do I need a loyalty program?

Not for birthday texts, which only need a birthday on file. In Sticky SMS, milestone triggers can work without Sticky Cards loyalty, depending on what the milestone is based on. A loyalty tier milestone needs a loyalty program behind it.

Where does the birthday come from in Sticky SMS?

From sign-up. Sticky SMS is by Sticky Cards, the loyalty and marketing platform for cannabis dispensaries, and Sticky Cards sign-up records each customer’s date of birth for the age gate.
